Noise Pollution Detector (2009)

circuit, electronics, street intervention, mic, sonification

This is the prototype of an audio-intervention device-circuit. It will be developed to be
a “stand-alone” street intervention action. It is so far the demonstration of the project
to be developed at Porto Summer School residency this coming July in Portugal.

In a first instance it captures volume inputs through an electret mic. If the volume is below 60db, the blue led lights. Once volumes over 60db are detected the red danger leds are lit. The idea now is to investigate different outputs that could be generated to express the “detection” and “alarm” of noise pollution levels.

The mic pre-amp uses a 9V battery and gives a 5 Volt output, modified to be linked to Arduino for further steps of the experience, which would be, in a second instance, to recognize the frequency range and spectrum of the Noise Pollution at different spots, cities, etc.
